One of my favorite times of year is right around the corner – lupine season in the White Mountains! As a New Hampshire photographer, one of my absolute favorite things to do is lupine flower photo sessions.
Each year, I have lots of couples contact me about doing a photo session among the lupine, so I wanted to put together this post with my best tips for planning your shoot. Whether you’re planning engagement photos, a couples session, a proposal, or even a family photoshoot, these tips should help you make the most of your session!
Planning for Your Lupine Flower Photo Session

If you’re not familiar, lupines are purple and pink wildflowers that bloom every year in June. They can be found all across New England, but are particularly concentrated in the towns in and around the White Mountains. They are such an iconic summer-in-New-Hampshire sight to see.
If you’ve never had a chance to see the lupine in full bloom, I highly recommend making the trip up! It’s SO worth it.
So, here is everything you need to know about planning your session:
Where to Have Your Lupine Flower Photo Session

There are lots of great places to view lupines throughout the White Mountains! Sugar Hill is probably the most popular spot, though, as it’s known for the famous fields of lupine with stunning mountain backdrops.
And if you’re in Sugar Hill, you MUST make a stop at Polly's Pancake Parlor – an iconic White Mountains restaurant and fan favorite 😊
You can also find lakeside lupine views in Lisbon, NH, and more lupine over in Tamworth and Conway as well.
I have spent so much time exploring the White Mountains and all of the surrounding towns, so I have lots of insight on the best places to go. Especially if you’re looking to avoid the crowds! I love showing my clients lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path spots for great lupine views.

The Best Time of Day for Your Photoshoot
Hands down, the best times of day for your photoshoot are early morning or just an hour before sunset. Since the lupines bloom when the sun is out the longest in New England, midday sun can be harsh.
For photos with great, soft lighting, definitely plan for a morning or golden hour session.
What to Wear for Your Lupine Flower Photo Session

I always tell my clients that the best outfits are those that you feel comfortable and confident in. I recommend choosing something that feels like you, rather than agonizing over shopping for a new outfit!
But that being said, there are definitely some colors that work best among the lupines.
I personally love off white, cream, and browns. They really allow for the purple in the flowers to shine!
And if you’re going the neutrals route, keep in mind that green can be done, but you’ll want to be careful not to match the green grass of the field.
