Okay first things first, congratulations!! If you’re reading this, you’re likely expecting, which is so amazing! Pregnancy is such a huge milestone and a truly special time in your life. So if you’ve been thinking about documenting this moment, I’ve got some maternity photo session tips today to help you plan your shoot!
Maternity Photo Session Tips: Should You Take Maternity Pictures?
Do you even want to take maternity photos? I get it–I’m a mom of 5 myself, and if I’m being honest, pregnancy isn’t always glamorous by any means. Not everyone has that magical experience that you think you’re supposed to have, and it can be downright uncomfortable! But believe it or not, there will be a time when you’ll want to remember these days.
I love documenting this milestone for women because it’s such a huge transitional process. So while you probably don’t feel like yourself most days, you may want to capture this special and unique season of your life.
What If Your Partner Doesn’t Want To Do Them?
What if your partner isn’t up for another photoshoot?
That’s totally fine! In fact, I really love solo maternity sessions because it’s a really great way to form a deeper connection with you, which always results in amazing photos.
Yes, this time is special because life is being brought into this world, but at the same time, a mother is being built. This is an incredibly beautiful thing all on its own and deserves to be celebrated. 🥰
Maternity Photo Session Tips to Help You Feel Your Best
I have a super thorough guide to maternity photos on my blog in this post, but here are some of my favorite tips for maternity sessions:
1 - Wear Something You're Really Comfortable In
This is one of my biggest recommendations for any session, but especially for maternity photos. Pregnancy can make it tricky to feel your best, so choose something that genuinely makes you feel good! When you feel comfortable and confident, you will love your photos.
2 - Choose a Location or Theme That Feels Meaningful
I’ve had couples choose to do their maternity sessions in the same location they eloped, or during the snowy months because they love the winter, or by the beach because that’s their favorite place. You can really make the session your own and feel true to you! And you can also bring along special momentos like your ultrasound pictures, a onesie, or something else to bring your baby into the shoot. There are lots of ways we can tell your family’s story through the session!
3 - Have Fun With It
If your partner is going to join you, consider treating the session like a date! Especially if this is your first baby, it’s fun to embrace these last few moments of just the two of you before your amazing new chapter begins.
