If you’re reading this, then chances are you are expecting – congratulations!! This is such a beautiful and exciting time. As a NH maternity photographer (and mom of five myself!), I really enjoy documenting this season for you, it’s just so special. So to help you plan, I put together my best tips and created this guide to maternity photos in New Hampshire.

First, When To Schedule Maternity Photos

Pregnancy Announcement Photography

Before scheduling a maternity session later on in your pregnancy, you may want to consider doing an announcement session. They’re a really fun way to let everyone know you’re expecting! I recommend doing this session between 12 and 16 weeks.

Maternity Photos

Then, for traditional maternity photos, I personally recommend taking them between 27 and 34 weeks. This is because that’s when you’ll feel your best while your belly is most prominent.

However, if you’re reading this and realizing you’re beyond 34 weeks, don’t worry! You can still reach out to get something scheduled. 😊

Your body is going through the most beautiful transition and deserves to be documented!

Choosing a Location for Your Maternity Photoshoot

My favorite part of the photoshoot planning process is always choosing a location. I’ve actually created a comprehensive NH Photoshoot Location Guide, and I give all of my clients access to it to help in the planning process. It has over 25 locations with photos and full descriptions of each, so you know exactly what you’re getting into!

The locations in the guide are across New Hampshire– from the ocean to the mountains, and everything in between. You can choose from the guide, or let me know if you have another location in mind!

Bring the Family!

If this is not your first baby, I always suggest bringing along the whole family to your session. Becoming a sibling is a big deal, so including your other children makes them feel really special as well!

What To Wear for Your Maternity Photos

I recommend wearing something you’re comfortable in that will highlight your belly. Some popular options recently have been jeans and a white t-shirt, flowy dresses, or bodycon dresses.

As far as colors go, soft neutrals photograph really well. Consider styles that reflect your personality and match the vibe you’re going for.

And my inbox is always open – feel free to send outfits or clothing combos my way, and I’ll let you know what will look best for photos!

How To Prepare for Your Session

Here are my best tips for preparing for your maternity photo session:

  • Try your clothes on a day or two before your session as a test run. Make sure you feel comfortable in them!
  • Rest before your session.
  • Stay hydrated – both before and after your session.
  • If you’re planning on showing your belly, I highly recommend wearing bicycle shorts or maternity leggings before your session so that you don’t have lines from your clothing or underwear.
  • Gather any props that you’d like to include before your session in a bag or basket so you don’t worry about forgetting anything.

The Length of Your Session

You can expect your maternity session to last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. This varies from session to session, and depends on the weather, the number of outfits you’ll have, and the location of the session.

Don’t Forget To Print Your Maternity Photos!

After your maternity session, you’ll receive an online gallery with all of your images. To make the most out of the experience, I always recommend printing them! They make great keepsakes and decor around your home.

I also highly recommend printing your photos directly from your online gallery to ensure the highest quality prints. The online print shop offers classic prints, wall art, cards, and photo albums. There are lots of ways you can use your photos!

You’ll be able to access the print shop by clicking the storefront icon in the upper right corner of your gallery.
