When you look back on your wedding album, your getting-ready wedding photos are often some of the most meaningful. They capture the anticipation, the excitement, and those sweet behind-the-scenes moments before you say “I do.” To make the most of this part of your day, a little preparation goes a long way! With just a few thoughtful steps, you can create a beautiful setting that allows your photographer to capture images you’ll treasure forever.
How to Prepare for Gorgeous Getting-Ready Wedding Photos

Keep the Getting Ready Space Tidy
One of the best ways to achieve that nice, clean aesthetic is by making sure your getting-ready space is free from clutter. Clear counters, pick up stray bags, and tidy common sitting areas before your photographer arrives. Since you will have a lot on your plate on your wedding day, I definitely recommend asking someone in your wedding party or a family member to help you with this!
Pro tip: If you’re getting ready at a hotel, use one room as your main getting-ready space and have a friend or family member use another room for storing bags, food, or extra items. This way, the photos are focused on you and your wedding party without the items in the background.

Gather Your Details Ahead of Time
Many photographers (myself included!) like to begin the day by photographing your wedding details, and having everything ready before we arrive makes this process smooth and stress-free. I recommend gathering all the items you’d like included in a flat lay into one box or bag before the big day.
Some common details to include are:
- Rings
- Invitations and stationery
- Shoes (for both partners)
- Jewelry
- Perfume or cologne
- Florals or boutonnieres
- Family heirlooms
- Cuff links or watches
These are things you can gather in the days leading up to your wedding, so it’s all ready to go, and you don’t have to think about it on the day of. And then your photographer can get right to work creating beautiful flat-lay images for your gallery!

Choose a Space With Great Lighting
Lighting makes a huge difference in your getting-ready wedding photos. If you have the option, choose a space with lots of natural light. This is something you can keep in mind when searching for your venue, but if you’ve already booked, don’t worry! Just consider the light when you’re selecting hotels or Airbnbs for your getting-ready space. A bright, airy room will give your photos a soft and natural glow.
