If you are newly engaged, then this post is for you! Today I’m sharing my best engagement photo tips to help you prepare for your session. This is such an amazing time in your life, and engagement pictures are a great way to celebrate and kick off your wedding season.
And they’re FUN!
But First, Should You Take Engagement Photos?
I like to encourage all of my couples to take engagement photos, even if it’s not something they have considered before. It’s a great idea for so many reasons:
- Engagement photos are a great way to connect with each other and an amazing opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day. It’s also just a nice way to commemorate this special time in your lives.
- If you do your engagement pictures with your wedding photographer, it will help you build a strong connection which will make your wedding day even more fun and relaxed.
- You can use the photos on your save-the-dates, in your guestbook, or for other wedding decor - as well as of course on display around your house!
Engagement Photo Tips
Some tips that I often share with couples are to wear clothes that you feel confident yet comfortable in, and to not take the shoot too seriously. You will wind up with better photos this way!
But my biggest tip is to take a thoughtful approach to deciding where you take your photos and what you do during the session.
Is there a place that's meaningful to you and your relationship? If there's not a specific place, think about the dates you love to go on together. Do you tend to go to the beach? Picnic on a cliffside? Grab drinks at a dive bar? A park near your place?
Your photos will feel so much more like you if we explore a location that is similar to somewhere you normally would go together. Of course, you can always choose a location that you've never explored together — but have been wanting to! I have plenty of recommendations and love to show couples some of my favorite New Hampshire hidden gems.
Your engagement photo session can be as unique and adventurous as you want it to be! The biggest thing is to think about ways to make the session feel really authentic to who you are as a couple.
Here are some examples:
This couple chose to do part of their session at the bottom of Loon Mountain by the river. This location has significance to the couple because their family owns a condo in the area so they come up to visit frequently.
This couple had their engagement photos taken at the bride's family lake house where she spent her summers growing up.
This couple chose to take their engagement photos at the same location where they got engaged!
Nicole & Chandler love the White Mountains and camping, so that was the theme that they chose for their pictures.
I also did an engagement session in Portland, Maine where we did some outdoor photos and rooftop bar photos. The couple looooves Portland, so that’s where they wanted to take their engagement photos!
